What could be more frustrating than investing in a new phone or computer and no longer being able to use software or games that you liked, but which unfortunately are outdated.

There are free virtual machines or emulators available that allow you to run classic software and games on your iPhone, iPad tablet, or macOS computer.

But it was only after several attempts that Apple finally approved UTM SE from the publisher Turing Software weeks after the company rejected it and banned it from being placed on third-party app stores in the European Union.

The application is now available for free for iOS, iPadOS and visionOS in the United States. For the Canadian market, no date has yet been set, but availability usually follows some time after that of the American market.

UTM SE Features

  • Supports about thirty different processors and the games or applications for which they were developed
  • Runs almost all operating systems
  • Configuration and customization of the virtual machine on graphical interface

As with other emulators on the App Store, there’s not much you can do with UTM SE. It doesn’t come with any operating system, but the app links to UTM’s site, which offers guides for emulating everything from Windows XP to Windows 11, as well as downloads of pre-built Linux virtual machines.

Here are the Windows versions supported by UTM on macOS.
