Apple analyzed several use cases to create Double Tap for Watches, executives explain

“A new way to use wearable devices.” That was the way like the The Verge characterized the arrival of Double Tap (Double Tap)a feature present in the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2. The website had the opportunity to speak exclusively with some Maçã executives regarding the new feature.

The gesture, it is worth remembering, although announced in September, was only made available today with the arrival of watchOS 10.1. In practice, it allows you to perform various actions on the Apple Watch without touching the screen — this includes controlling music playback and even answering phone calls.

In the interview, David Clark (Senior Director of Apple Watch Software Engineering) and Eric Charles (Apple Watch senior product marketing manager) detailed how the function changes the interaction with the watch and increases independence from smartphones.

This feature is not just a “trick”, but rather, according to Apple, the result of thorough research and development. In order to achieve the result it wanted, the company says it always kept reliability in mind.

Reliability means that when you perform the gesture, we can detect it. Reliability also means that when we do things that are almost like tapping or double-tapping, we’re not mistakenly triggering the gesture. We need to ensure that we are able to detect the correct action by adjusting these aspects in appropriate scenarios.

Unlike the AssistiveTouchFor example, Double Tap takes advantage of the processing of the S9 chip, which has four neural engines for machine learning. This makes gesture identification 15% more accurate and, at the same time, less demanding in terms of energy consumption.

To achieve this feat, it uses sophisticated algorithms that analyze data from the accelerometer, gyroscope and optical heart rate sensor to understand the movement of a person’s wrist.

We collect data from hundreds of users, thousands of instances of these gestures internally to create models that represent all the different use cases where we believe Double Tap will be used. There was an exhaustive list of screenshots, what these screens were, how a user might access them, and then a detailed discussion of each of these areas.

The gesture, however, has restrictions, such as limited customization options and lack of compatibility with some third-party apps: “While customization can be a really powerful tool, customization is often where much greater complexity can enter the process,” Clark explained.

For the The Vergeas technology advances, smartwatches might become even more capable, allowing users to multitask on the go without the need for constant interaction with their phone.

As technology continues to evolve, we can expect smartwatches like the Apple Watch to play an increasingly significant role in our lives, offering new ways to interact with the digital world. Double Tap, therefore, seems to be just the gateway to these changes.
