Apple abandoned one of the most ambitious projects in the company’s history – an electric car. Company employees spoke about this on February 27 Bloomberg.

Some of the nearly 2,000 employees working in the “automotive team” known as the Special Projects Group (SPG) will be transferred to the artificial intelligence division, an area that has become an increasing priority for the company.

The move was welcomed by investors: Apple shares rose about 1.2% to $183.37 after Bloomberg reported the news, following a previous decline.

The company began working on the car around 2014, aiming for a fully autonomous electric vehicle with a limousine-like interior and voice-activated navigation. In theory, its cost had already reached about $100 thousand. But the project experienced difficulties almost from the very beginning, since Apple changed the team leadership and strategy several times.

The head of Tesla, billionaire Elon Musk, was also happy: he sent a post to the social network with a welcome emoticon and a cigarette.
