The United Nations will launch an appeal on Monday to fund their humanitarian operations in Ukraine, the Secretary General of the international organization, Antonio Guterres, announced on Saturday.
In a telephone interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the Secretary-General expressed the UN’s determination to strengthen humanitarian aid in the Eastern European country, a statement from the organization said.
On Friday, the UN SG appointed Sudanese Amin Awad as UN Coordinator for the crisis in Ukraine to lead the humanitarian response there.
He noted that the United Nations is currently stepping up the provision of life-saving assistance in Ukraine, including in the eastern part of the country, on both sides of the line of contact.
The multilateral organization had also called for “safe and unhindered access” for humanitarian aid in Ukraine.
For his part, the head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, declared on his Twitter account on Saturday that “more than 150,000 Ukrainian refugees have now crossed into neighboring countries, half of between them in Poland and many in Hungary, Moldova, Romania and beyond”.
“Displacement in Ukraine is also increasing, but the military situation makes it difficult to estimate numbers and provide aid,” he added.
