The need for immediate reinforcement of the Port Authority of Spetses with additional staff is requested by the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy, the mayor of Spetses, Eugenia Fragia, requests with an urgent letter.
The letter was sent on June 28, 2024, to the Minister Christos Stylianides and through her the mayor expresses serious concerns regarding the operation and security of the port during the tourist season.
The agency foresees a workforce of 33 people and only 11 are serving. In the period 2016-2019, 28 Coast Guards were serving. Citizens are served according to shifts and by telephone appointments. At least 20 Coast Guards are needed in the summer and 14 in the winter.
“In Nafplio, for example, 60 officers serve approximately and the ministry might send 4 people on a 3-month secondment”, point out circles familiar with the situation.
The mayor requests the immediate reinstatement of the seconded officers and the strengthening of the Port Authority in order to achieve at least 80% of the planned staffing.
In addition, in her letter she mentions the intention of the Municipality to provide free accommodation and an allowance of 150 euros per month as an incentive for the executives who will be posted to the island while underlining the determination of the local government to ensure the smooth operation of the service.
