The Mortal Kombat sequel, which we’ll simply refer to as Mortal Kombat 2, has received an exciting update. The Mortal Kombat franchise is one of the biggest gaming franchises, which has always made it suitable for a movie adaptation. Hollywood took to it in the 90s, and although the film was not perfect, it was better than many other video game film adaptations. In it, all the characters are dressed in the right costumes, they kill each other quite brutally. It’s not very elegant, but it’s something that was at least relatively appreciated. However, the fans wanted something edgier, with a bigger budget, and the WB decided to make it happen. The movie wasn’t great either, but it was violent and bloody, so it was on the right track.
The 2021 reboot went well enough to warrant a sequel, but we haven’t heard much regarding it. However, it looks like it’s not far off. Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon told a fan on Twitter that he’s been reading an “exciting” script for Mortal Kombat 2, so the film’s drafts are definitely done. It’s unclear if he’s reading multiple scripts from different writers with different stories, or if they’re just different drafts of the same shared story. In any case, most likely, the case will not be limited to Boone. Adaptations tend to go right over the heads of the creators, but if they’re lucky, the studio and producers often let them advise on the film. It’s unclear how Boone is involved in the film, but it’s good to hear that the script is already done.
At the moment, it is not known when to expect the release of the film. There is a good chance that the film will start filming in 2023 if the script is in good condition, and perhaps we will see it in 2024. If a new Mortal Kombat game is on the way, then you can expect the release or announcement to be related to the movie in some way, just for marketing purposes.
