A new communiqué from Apple just released shows that the ecosystem of App Store facilitated $1.1 trillion in developer revenue and sales by 2022, according to an independent study by economists at the Analysis Group.
The findings reinforce the importance of the Maçã store for the sector’s macroeconomics and certainly works as yet another attempt by Maçã to rebut the antitrust allegations regarding the platform.
The App Store continues to create incredible opportunities for developers around the world, with over 90% of revenue and sales going exclusively to developers and businesses of all sizes — with no commission paid to Apple. Additionally, a new analysis by the Progressive Policy Institute found that the iOS app economy now supports more than 4.8 million jobs in the US and Europe, with approximately 2.4 million in each region.
The CEO of Apple, Tim Cookalso commented on the results of the study and the importance of the App Store in the economy of the segment:

As this study shows, the App Store is a vibrant and innovative marketplace where opportunity thrives, and we are more committed than ever to investing in the success of developers and the future of the app economy.
The study details that, out of the amount of US$1.1 trillion, App Store developers generated $910 billion in total billing and sales from the sale of physical goods and services, $109 billion in app and $104 billion in digital goods and services.
As a result, developers’ revenues and sales increased 27% between 2019 and 2020; 27% between 2020 and 2021; It is 29% between 2021 and 2022. Altogether, since 2019, US developer revenue and sales have increased by more than 80%. In Europe, developer revenue and sales since 2019 have seen an above-average increase of 116%.
Also according to the data presented, in 2022, 54% of downloads occurred in stores outside the countries of origin of the developers. In addition, the App Store attracted more than 650 million weekly visitors worldwide in 2022, and users downloaded on average more than 747 million applications for the first time — and regarding 1.5 billion times for previous downloads — per week in 2022.
The study also found that as COVID-19 restrictions eased in many parts of the world, app categories such as travel and carpooling saw demand recover significantly. Travel sales made on iOS apps increased by 84% in 2022, while ride-sharing apps saw a 45% increase in sales.
Food and grocery sales apps are also among the fastest growing app categories. Since 2019, food delivery and pickup sales have more than doubled and grocery sales have more than tripled.
Apple also pointed out that, in all, iOS developers earned more than $320 billion from 2008 to 2022. In the same period, iOS users made more than 370 billion downloads and today, the App Store has 123x more apps — nearly 1.8 million — to choose from, compared to the few thousand available on the App Store in late 2008.
Finally, Apple highlighted that the App Store also “remains a safe and trusted marketplace for users, thanks to the rigorous app review process and robust privacy and security protections.” She also recalled that in 2022, the App Store prevented more than $2 billion in fraudulent transactions — and rejected 1.7 million app submissions for failing to meet privacy, security and quality standards.
