App State Women’s Basketball: Upcoming Game Against Coastal Carolina on January 18th

ATLANTA, Ga. – The App State women’s basketball team fell to Georgia State, 73-68, in Atlanta on Saturday.

For a third consecutive game and 11th game this season, senior Faith Alston was the Mountaineers’ top scorer, netting 28 points on the followingnoon. Alston accounted for three of the Mountaineers’ seven 3-point buckets and dished out a team-high seven assists. Sophomores Alexis Black and Chaé Harris both scored nine points. Harris also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. App State (8-8, 2-3 SBC) recorded 18 fastbreak points compared to Georgia State’s four. Over the course of the game, the lead changed nine times and the score tied eight times.

App State took an early 6-2 lead in the first quarter, building off jumpers from Alston and Harris as well as a fastbreak layup from graduate student Mariah Frazier. The Mountaineers stayed a step ahead of the Panthers until GSU took an 11-8 lead. Frazier made a late layup to close the deficit to 14-11 at the end of the period.

Fifth-year senior Taylor Lewis tied the score at 14 all with a 3-point bucket early in the second quarter. The Mountaineers kept pace with the Panthers, scoring 16 points to the Panthers’ 18 points over the course of the period, but trailed by five at the half (32-27).

Frazier opened the third quarter by completing a three-point play that brought App State within two of Georgia State’s lead. App State regained a one-point edge following Alston knocked down a 3-point bucket. Alston netted 12 of the Mountaineers’ 27 points in the third quarter, shooting 3-of-3 from the field, 1-of-1 from the arc, and 5-of-7 from the line. The Black and Gold closed the period with a 54-49 lead.

Georgia State was quick to find its stride in the fourth quarter, opening with a 7-0 run, as the Mountaineers faced a scoring drought. The Mountaineers and Panthers tied the score and traded the lead three times before the Panthers found a spark with a late 10-point run. Alston accounted for 10 of the Mountaineers’ 14 points in the final period, including a last-second trey, but it wasn’t enough to catch up, as Georgia State clinched the win, 73-68.

UP NEXT

The Mountaineers return to Boone to host Coastal Carolina on Jan. 18 at 6:30 p.m. As a welcome back to students returning from break there will be free bucket hats for the first 250 students.

App State will then host Georgia Southern on Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. for Alumni Day. App State women’s basketball alumni are encouraged to take part in a pregame brunch. The game is part of a doubleheader with the men’s team, who will clash with Coastal Carolina at 4:30 p.m.
