‘App’ for Covid; Smartphone system to detect disease

London: With the help of artificial intelligence, scientists have come up with a smartphone application to identify the covid infection from people’s voices. The technology was presented at the European Respiratory Society International Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Covid affects upper airways and vocal cords. This causes a change in the person’s voice. The smartphone app will work by taking advantage of that possibility. The research was led by Wafa Aljawabi of Maastricht University in the Netherlands.

After installing the application on the mobile phone, the sound sample was collected from the user. He was asked to cough three times, take a deep breath through his mouth and read the verse displayed on the screen three times. The disease is confirmed by sound analysis using a technique called Mi1-Spectogram.

The system is claimed to be 89 percent accurate. PCR Wafa Aljawabi said that the new application will be beneficial for economically backward countries as the tests are expensive.
