Apostolos Tzitzikostas will be nominated by Greece for the position of Commissioner of the Commission, as the government representative Pavlos Marinakis announced during the briefing of the political editors on Thursday (01.08.24).

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has already informed Commission President Ursula von der Leyen about the Tzitzikosta proposal.

As Mr. Marinakis pointed out, “Apostolos Tzitzikostas is a person with experience in institutional roles both in Greece and in Europe, where in 2020 he was elected president of the European Committee of the Regions. At the same time, the governor of Central Macedonia is a young man who has been elected three times with percentages of over 50%.”

He added: “The choice of Mr. Tzitzikosta is a choice with political characteristics, which highlights the importance of Macedonia and Northern Greece for Europe, as a region with a strategic position, connectivity and geopolitical importance for both the Balkans and the Southeast Europe, as well as the north-eastern tip of the Mediterranean”.

It is noted that today at 18:00 Mr. Mitsotakis will meet Mr. Tzitzikostas at Megaro Maximos.
