Not all patients are “non-verbal”
Registered speech therapist “Snake Girl” on the Facebook page “speech therapy short story“Sharing pointed out that a 38-year-old novice mother who had just given birth had been treated earlier. Due to a massive hemorrhage during the delivery process, she had a brain ischemic stroke, which affected her ability to speak and developed aphasia. Related posts are as follows:
“Hi, I’m the speech therapist, Miss Snake. I’m going to do some assessment with you today. What’s your name?”
“My name is Huang Xiaomei.”
“How old are you?”
「38。」
“Where do you live?”
“I live in Tung Chung.”
“Can you tell me the full address?”
“Kwai Tung Court, Tung Chung… er… Tung Chung… right?”
“Do you have trouble speaking and swallowing?”
“no problem.”
“Then do you remember what happened?”
“I came in to give birth to BB, and then, yes, that’s it, that Qi Yidi Geba, just learned that, that’s it, um, that’s it.” (Don’t worry, the two sentences that you can’t understand are random typing, but In reality, Xiaomei also used a bunch of meaningless words to pile up her answer to me)
Up to this moment, Xiaomei still didn’t feel that there was something wrong with her words.
“Now I want you to tell me the names of these items, what is this?” (Pick up a pen and show Xiaomei)
“This is… er… this is… ah, why can’t I say it? Why is it like this? This is… what I remember, it is I can’t tell, what is it called?”
At this moment, Xiaomei seemed to suddenly realize that there was something wrong with her speech.
“Snake Girl” said that Xiaomei became a mother the day before Mother’s Day, but unfortunately there were complications and a lot of bleeding. However, when the bleeding finally stopped and he woke up in the intensive care unit, the nurse found that his speech was slurred and his questions were not answered. It turned out that he lost too much blood during the hemorrhage, which caused the brain to lack oxygen and caused a stroke. Suffered from aphasia, affecting the ability to speak. “Snake Girl” said frankly:
“So once you give birth to a child, you will go through the gate of hell. Everyone should love Mama Tin, and husbands should love Mrs. Tin!”
“Snake Girl” also introduced that there are different types of aphasia, and not all aphasia patients are “non-speaking”. Some patients with aphasia speak less fluently, intermittently, and have difficulty finding words, just like we often say “speaking to the edge of the lips”. Some patients with aphasia seem to speak fluently, but they can’t express their words, or they can only speak a bunch of meaningless words. Some patients have relatively good comprehension skills, while others cannot understand other people’s speech. There are also some patients who can understand and speak fluently, but they just can’t repeat what the other person said.
Generally speaking, there are 8 categories of aphasia, which are distinguished by 3 aspects of the patient, including:
- speaking fluency
- Comprehension
- the ability to repeat what others say
“Snake Girl” said that Xiaomei’s expression of all nouns is relatively poor, and she failed to name the correct object even when prompted. So “Snake Girl” decided to train in another way, which is to use some “automatic” phrases, such as “Congratulations_”, “Happy Birthday_”, etc., let Xiaomei say the last word first, and then 2 , 3 words, 4 words. It is hoped that this method will allow her to open the vocabulary drawer in her mind once more and gradually improve. Two weeks later, Xiaomei was able to name some simple objects. Since her condition was stable, she was transferred to a rehabilitation hospital for recuperation.
“I hope she has recovered today, can hold the child and talk regarding the world, and grow up with the child.”
4 common symptoms of aphasia
Registered Speech Therapist Yeung Wing Sze once interviewed by “Sky Post” pointed out that aphasia is an acquired language impairment, which is mainly caused by brain damage, such as stroke, brain trauma, followingmath of a car crash or brain tumor. Aphasia can occur if a brain tumor grows larger and damages the areas of the brain that control speech. Ms. Yang pointed out that within 6 months of the onset of the disease is the golden recovery period, the earlier the patient receives treatment, the better; if the treatment is received 12 months following the onset, the progress rate will be slower.
Patients with aphasia generally have varying degrees of impact on language expression, comprehension, writing, and reading. The following are the four common symptoms:
