“Every woman must know that she will not be left alone if she is affected by violence,” said Women’s Minister Susanne Raab on the occasion of the opening of the new women’s transitional apartment in Rohrbach. Women affected by violence and usually their children can find accommodation there if they have to leave their own home following domestic violence. By setting up the transitional apartment, the state of Upper Austria and the Rohrbach women’s network are sending a strong signal of support for women.
More than just a roof over your head
The initiative not only offers security, but also perspectives: “In this apartment, the women find safe accommodation until they have calmly reorganized their lives. Every woman has the right to a life free of violence,” said Jutta Müller, managing director of the women’s network and tireless campaigner for such an institution. Deputy State Governor Christine Haberlander put it this way: “This apartment is more than just a roof over your head. It is a sign of our solidarity and a promise for a better future.”
Minister Raab refers to the “highest women’s budget of all time”: The expansion of protective and transitional housing is another milestone: “Women threatened and affected by violence need safe living space in a protected environment in order to be able to free themselves from the spiral of violence. Play “Regional advice centers and initiatives such as the Rohrbach women’s network play an important role.” There has been an increase in the need for advice there in recent years. To make matters worse, affected women usually face a complex web of problems. Moving out of your own home can be a first step towards a self-determined life.
Broad investment
The federal government will provide a total of 12 million euros over the next three years to expand these facilities. Almost two million euros are being invested in Upper Austria alone. Every affected woman should find an offer close to home. There is enough need. There are already cases that are eligible for transitional housing. Experience shows that women use the offer for up to six months. The Rohrbacher apartment can accommodate two families. Everything is coordinated by the women’s network. The apartment rent is paid by the social welfare association.
