Inauguration Shenanigans: Gibran Gets Cheered and Prabowo Stands Tall!

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia — It’s that time of year when politicians dust off their shiny suits and practice their “serious face” in front of the mirror. Yes, folks, it’s inauguration season!

The Buildup

So, on Sunday, October 20th, the plenary session of the MPR (that’s the People’s Consultative Assembly for the uninitiated) witnessed the rather ceremonial handover of power. This time around, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the charming son of President Jokowi, stepped into the light as Vice President. And let me tell you, there were cheers! I mean, who wouldn’t want to throw a few well-deserved accolades at a guy who’s related to the man behind all those viral cat memes?

Gibran Gets Some Love

As MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani opened the session with a warm welcome to Gibran, the cheers from attendees might have made you think they were watching a live concert rather than a political event. “We respect the elected vice president of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Gibran Rakabuming for the 2024-2029 term of office!” Muzani proclaimed. The crowd loved it. Some might even say they cheered as if Gibran just released a chart-topping album!

But Wait, There’s More! Prabowo Steals the Show

In a remarkable contrast, the atmosphere for Prabowo Subianto, the presidential candidate, was more like the opening night of a blockbuster movie. We’re talking loud applause and a standing ovation that could rival what you see at those awards shows where no one actually wins anything. I’m almost convinced he had a fireworks display planned as he walked in!

Honestly, Gibran might have been showered with affection, but it was Prabowo who got the *real* rock star treatment. You have to wonder, was Gibran just the warm-up act for this show? Maybe next time they can throw in a pyrotechnics display to spice it up!

The Family Affair

Meanwhile, Gibran’s younger brother, Kaesang Pangarep, was also soaking up the spotlight, being cheered on like he was the next big thing on social media. Ah, family support! With his sister Kahiyang Ayu and brother-in-law Bobby Nasution present, it was practically a family reunion—everyone cheering, joyous laughter all around. Can we get a reality TV show started, please?

The Moment of Truth

Finally, in a spectacularly solemn moment, Prabowo and Gibran were officially sworn in. Yes, the two of them stood there, taking oaths as the new President and Vice President, rubbing elbows, and, I assume, making plans to figure out which one of them makes the best nasi goreng. (Spoiler alert: Don’t ask Gibran; he’s still learning.)

Gibran will now, in essence, be the 14th Vice President and presumably the first one with an official family fan club. Meanwhile, Prabowo gets to adorn his title as the eighth President. In Indonesian politics, the title “eighth” sounds almost as exciting as “14th,” but hey, at least they’re popular!

So there you have it! A day of political theatre where cheers were traded for cold, hard votes. Just remember, folks, politics is the one place where the drama can make a daytime soap opera feel like a documentary. Until next time, keep your eye on Gibran and Prabowo—who knows what kind of comedy show will unfold next!
