Antwerp’s Victory: Resuming the Season as Champions in a Quiet Yet Powerful Manner

Antwerp resumed their season as champions. A short victory, and a season launched quietly.

Antwerp resumed its season much like the previous one: without flaming, without making noise, but also without weakening. Faced with a Circle of Bruges still as eye-catching, the Great Old won by a short header (1-0).

The first period was however exciting and of quality, with Ondrejka alerting Warleson, and Denkey Butez. The intensity was present, with especially Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Jacob Ondrejka at the helm on the Antwerp side, and Bataille which comes close to opening the score. Unfortunately, it’s a self-goal that will unlock the game: Ondrejka does (almost) all the work, Jesper Daland ends in his nets (45th + 1).

In the second half, the defending champion will step back a little too much: in a match that has become rough, Olivier Deman alerts Butez (62nd), before the game stagnates. The only thrill: the superb comeback of the 16-year-old prodigy George Ilenikhena, who made Bosuil get up with each shot.

If Antwerp must remain attentive, Arthur Vermeeren forces Warleson to be too, sending a real cannonball that the Brazilian can only watch crashing into his lath (87th). It will be the last flash of the meeting, won without shining but without (really) shaking by the Belgian champion.
