“We will seek the unconditional restoration of our rights to use and dispose of our diplomatic property,” said the diplomat, whose words were published by the Telegram channel of the Russian Embassy in the United States.
He added: “We call on the US authorities to come to their senses. We remind you that America has the widest network of diplomatic presence in the world. The precedent created by Washington destroys the rules of civilized communication between countries and will inevitably come back to haunt the United States.”
“It is clear to us that we are talking about a banal settling of scores, about a desire to annoy Russia and take revenge on it. When the US administration does not like someone’s foreign policy, it starts hitting everything it can reach without trial or investigation, with complete disregard for legal norms and its own assumptions,” Antonov stressed.
Moscow noted that the United States illegally seized six Russian properties in 2017 using the “raider seizure” method: country houses in Maryland and New York, the trade mission building in Washington, the consular services building and the State Department headquarters, the consul general’s residence in San Francisco (California), and the consul general’s residence in Seattle (Washington).
At the end of August 2023, Antonov called on Washington to “stop the rampage, comply with international obligations and return every piece of stolen Russian diplomatic property in the United States to its owners.”
The Director of the North American Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Alexander Darchev, earlier stressed that the actions of US government agencies in relation to Russian diplomatic property are contrary to international law, primarily the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, according to which the premises of diplomatic missions, their furniture and other items located therein are immune from search and seizure measures. According to Darchev, Russia demands the return of these assets and compensation for the damage caused.
