The musician’s funeral took place at the Chalandrio Cemetery at noon on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.

Devastated, his brother Akis as well as his friends and colleagues, such as Yiannis Zouganelis, Yiannis Yokarinis, Paschalis, Johnny Vavouras, Giorgos Trantalidis (member of the legendary Socrates) and dozens more, said their last “farewell” to the great deceased. who played a big role in the establishment of the Greek rock scene, being one of its most important representatives.

At the age of 73, the great Antonis Turkogiorgis passed away on Easter Sunday after serious health problems that he had been dealing with for years. When he was the singer and bass player of Socrates, who in barren times for Greek rock, in the 70s, released unique records and went on tours outside the borders. Together with the leading guitarist Yiannis Spathas, who passed away five years ago, while two years have also passed since the death of the group’s drummer, Nikos Antipas.

Born on February 18, 1951, Antonis Turkogiorgis formed Socrates Drank the Conium in 1969 in Piraeus with Yiannis Spatha on guitar and Ilias Boukouvala on drums. Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Frank Zappa, Cream were their great loves and influences and in their concerts they often played their well-known hits.

They have released seven studio albums and are best known for songs such as ‘Starvation’ and ‘Mountains’. Their album ‘Phos’, in collaboration with Vangelis Papathanasiou, was the best-selling Greek rock album of the 70s, selling more than 300,000 copies. Socrates became known for combining the style of Greek traditional continental music and intense rock style.

For several years after 1986, the group did not perform live. However, in 1999 it reunited with a concert in Lycabettus, where the main members were reunited (Tourkogiorgis-Spathas-Trantalidis) with the addition of new musicians (Dimitris Bellos – keyboards, Markella Panagiotou and Nikos Kouroupakis – backing vocals). Pianist Dimitris Polytimos collaborated with them.

After some appearances there were significant changes in the members and the group took a stable form from 2002 until 2010 with: Yannis Spatha, Antonis Turkogiorgis, Maki Ioulis, Asteris Papastamatakis and Markella Panagiotou. During this time, the group played big concerts all over Greece and also in clubs in Athens, including Rodon, Kyttaros, Rodeo and House Of Art.

In 2009, Yiannis Spathas, Antonis Turkogiorgis and Makis Giulis started to record new songs, however during the recordings Antonis Turkogiorgis’ stroke stopped the band’s progress. This material was saved and released in September 2023 under the title “Last Forever”.

Antonis Turkogiorgis had also released a series of personal records such as: “Ta Matia 14” (1986), “Episode” (1988), “Monon Orthioi” (1990), “Fire, Woman and Rock and Roll” (1991) (with Lina Babatsia), “Steps” (1992), “Ugh!” (1998).

In April 2010, Antonis Turkogiorgis suffered a stroke and was transferred to a hospital in Athens. Since then he has never been able to make a substantial comeback. He had then undergone a special operation for intravascular embolization of a brain aneurysm and at the completion of the operation the doctors expressed to his wife their optimism that he would live, however not as he had known until then.

In 2007 he released his autobiographical book, entitled “The Band”, in which he humorously and vividly records how a band is created based on his personal experience, while at the same time unfolding his musical path from his first steps.
