France – Frenchman Antoine Griezmann, the Spanish player for Atletico Madrid, announced yesterday, Monday, his retirement from international football, a few days before the announcement of the French national team’s list to face Israel and Belgium in the European Nations League.
Griezmann (33 years old) revealed his decision on the “X” platform, and wrote: “With a heart full of memories, I close this chapter of my life.. Thank you for this beautiful adventure with the national team.. See you.”
The French star said in a video clip: “Today, with a heavy heart, I announce my retirement from international football with the French national team, after 10 amazing years marked by challenges, successes and unforgettable moments. It is time for me to turn the page and make room for the new generation.”
He continued: “Wearing this shirt was an honor and a privilege for me. From March 2014 until last September, I had the opportunity to experience incredible moments alongside exceptional teammates. We shared victories that will remain forever engraved in our memories.”
Griezmann carried the French national team jersey in 137 international matches, and he is the third most capped player with the “Roosters” national team after Lilian Thuram (142) and Hugo Lloris (145).
The Atletico Madrid striker scored 44 goals during his career, and is the fourth-highest scorer with the French national team, behind Olivier Giroud (57), Thierry Henry (51), and Kylian Mbappe (48).
Griezmann won the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the European Nations League title in 2021, and reached the final of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He also qualified for the 2016 European Cup final in France and the 2024 European Cup semi-finals in Germany.
France will play two matches against Israel and Belgium in the third and fourth rounds of the European Nations League on October 10 and 14, respectively, for the second group.
