Antisocial Incidents Plagues Cork Buses, Data Reveals

Antisocial ‌Behavior on Cork Buses: A Growing Concern

Cork buses have⁢ become ⁤a target for antisocial behavior, with 83 incidents reported in the first half of⁤ 2024. Data ⁣obtained through a‌ Freedom of Information act request revealed a concerning trend of ‍vandalism, verbal abuse, and threats ‌against drivers and passengers. The majority ‌of these incidents ‍occurred before 9 p.m., prompting⁣ calls for a ‍dedicated ⁣transport police force to address the issue. While incidents were reported throughout the day, the highest concentration fell between 12 p.m. and 9 p.m. Malicious damage, including throwing objects ⁤at buses, was the most frequently reported problem, ⁢followed by aggressive behavior from passengers. Stones ⁢were the most common projectile, with eggs and bottles also thrown at buses. Verbal abuse was ‍also‌ prevalent, directed towards both drivers⁢ and passengers. In several cases, passengers were reported to be ⁣under ‍the influence of drugs⁢ or alcohol. Bus ⁣drivers ⁢have expressed‍ concerns ⁤that⁣ these incidents are commonplace and frequently enough mishandled by management, leading some to believe the true number of incidents could be much higher than ⁣reported. While incidents occurred across various ⁣bus routes, the 203 route emerged as a particular hotspot. Other routes with meaningful issues included the 220, 202, 208, ⁢215, and 226. In response to these⁣ concerns, Bus⁤ Éireann emphasized their commitment to safety and stated that all reported incidents are‍ thoroughly ⁢investigated.

Bus Éireann carries out‌ over 10,000 scheduled services ‍in Cork each week. While occurrences of antisocial ⁢behavior are low, ‍Bus Éireann takes each reported incident very seriously. all are investigated by Bus Éireann in liaison with An⁣ Garda Síochána, as necessary.” – Bus ⁤Éireann Spokesperson

Bus Éireann stated‌ that they‌ have procedures in place for drivers to ‍handle disruptive behavior and that all vehicles ⁣are equipped with ‍internal and external CCTV cameras to⁣ deter and document incidents. They also highlighted the presence of security‍ personnel in larger bus stations and the ability to deploy mobile security patrols when needed.

Cork ⁤Bus Drivers face Daily Abuse: Urgent Action Needed

Bus drivers in Cork are enduring a shocking level of abuse and harassment, a new report reveals. The ⁢statistics paint a disturbing picture ⁤of ⁣the reality faced by these essential workers on a daily basis. According to the ‌report, a staggering two out of every three incidents of abuse occur during daylight hours, between 9am ‌and 7:30pm. Sinn Féin TD for ‍Cork ⁤North Central, Thomas Gould, expressed ⁢his outrage, ‌stating “These⁣ are people attacking‍ buses and bus ⁢drivers in broad daylight. On what planet is that⁣ acceptable?” Gould highlighted the urgent need for increased police presence on public transport, stating, “Our garda‌ forces in Cork city are now stretched so thinly they cannot properly police public transport. Sinn Féin ⁢has long called for a dedicated public transport ⁢policing system be‌ put in place to protect⁣ bus drivers.” He further emphasized the ‌dire working conditions ‌faced by bus drivers, highlighting reports of broken seats, malfunctioning air conditioning, and inadequate safety equipment.⁢ “Drivers have sent me‌ pictures of seats that are in‌ tatters, buses that don’t have functioning air ⁣conditioning or proper safety equipment,” Gould revealed. Gould ⁢questioned ‍whyBus Éireann,⁤ when confronted, couldn’t⁣ offer a clear explanation ‍for the high rate of driver departures. “When I meet them,Bus Éireann can identify no reason for why bus drivers ‍are leaving in such big numbers. The treatment of drivers has to play a huge⁢ part in this,” Gould stated. The situation has led ⁣Gould ⁤to urge immediate ‍action, declaring,‍ “The bus drivers are doing trojan work in very ‌difficult conditions. They are being expected to drive in ⁢unsafe ‍conditions and⁢ meet unrealistic ‍timetables.⁤ How can we⁤ resolve‌ the‍ crisis in Bus‌ Éireann when this ⁢is how drivers ⁣are treated? I am calling for urgent intervention in‍ the bus service ⁤in Cork city. This⁢ can’t‍ wait until a new Goverment is formed.”

## Archyde Interview: Antisocial Behavior Plaguing Cork Buses

**Host:** Welcome back to Archyde. Today, we’re diving into a concerning issue plaguing Cork’s public transportation system: a surge in antisocial behavior on buses. We’ve invited Sinn Féin TD for Cork North central, Thomas Gould, to shed light on the situation and discuss potential solutions.

**Thomas Gould:** Thank you for having me. It’s significant to highlight the severity of this issue. Cork bus drivers are facing daily abuse, harassment, and even physical threats.

**Host:** The statistics are alarming. Data obtained through a Freedom of Information request revealed 83 incidents of antisocial behavior in just the first half of 2024. That’s an average of more than one incident per day. Can you elaborate on the nature of thes incidents?

**Thomas Gould:** It’s a disturbing range of behaviors. We’re seeing vandalism with objects thrown at buses, verbal abuse directed at both drivers and passengers, and even threats of violence. The majority of these incidents occur during daylight hours, between 9am and 7:30pm, which is particularly concerning.

**Host:** Bus Éireann claims they take each incident seriously and have procedures in place to handle disruptive behavior. They cite CCTV on board buses and security personnel at larger stations as deterrents. Do you believe these measures are sufficient?

**Thomas Gould:** I’m not convinced. While those measures are important, they’re clearly not enough to curb this trend. Drivers have expressed concerns that incidents are often mishandled by management, leading to underreporting. We need a more robust solution, and that involves

increasing police presence on public transport.

**Host:** You’ve advocated for a dedicated transport police force. How would that address the issue?

**Thomas Gould:** Dedicated public transport policing would provide a visible deterrent and offer quicker responses to incidents. It would ensure that passengers feel safe and secure, and it would send a clear message that antisocial behavior on buses won’t be tolerated.

**Host:** Aside from the safety concerns for drivers and passengers, there’s also the issue of driver retention. Bus Éireann is facing a high rate of driver departures. Can you explain the connection between these two issues?

**Thomas Gould:** Absolutely. Drivers are working under extremely challenging conditions. They’re facing abusive passengers, driving in unsafe vehicles with broken seats and malfunctioning air conditioning. This constant stress and lack of support contributes to driver burnout and ultimately leads to them leaving the profession altogether.

**Host:** What’s your message to Bus Éireann and the authorities regarding this pressing issue?

**Thomas gould:**

This crisis demands immediate intervention. We need to prioritize the safety and well-being of bus drivers, invest in better security measures, and consider establishing a dedicated transport police force. The current situation is unsustainable and requires urgent action.

**host:** Thank you for sharing your insights,Thomas. This is a crucial issue for the city of Cork and its citizens.

We hope this discussion sheds light on the problem and encourages all stakeholders to work towards a solution.
