The High demand in the first years of operation of the Oriente Tunnel exceeded initial forecasts that were made when the megaproject was built, which is strategic for its connection with the José María Cordova airport.

For this reason, the Government of Antioquia and the Túnel Aburrá Oriente Concession began, in 2022, the structuring of the second stage of the Túnel de Oriente road connection, which Construction will begin in the second half of 2024 in order to meet the growing demand of users.

The project includes the construction of the Seminario 2 tunnel (780 meters) and its connecting road to Loreto (Medellín); also 4.5 kilometers of open-air roads connecting the Seminario 2 tunnel and the Santa Elena 2 tunnel.

Besides, The 8.2-kilometer Santa Elena 2 tunnel will be completed where coating, paving, drainage, implementation of electromechanical equipment, fire protection network, cameras, communications, signage and ventilation works will be carried out for start-up and integration with the control center.

Finally, 800 meters of open-air tracks will be built between the Santa Elena 2 tunnel and Sajonia (Rionegro) which includes a section that connects the Santa Elena 2 tunnel with the Sajonia toll and a second viaduct parallel to the first, 380 metres long, that connects with the Sajonia – Aeropuerto dual carriageway.

Benefits of the project

With the project The traffic capacity will be doubled by the road connection strategic for the development and economic dynamics between the Aburrá Valley and the San Nicolás Valley.

These roads have dual carriageways in both directions, in turn, will connect with the José María Córdova Airport Interchange, currently under construction, This will contribute to reducing travel times between two strategic subregions for the competitiveness of the department, thereby improving the service levels of the Eastern Tunnel.

In addition to solving mobility and congestion problems, with the project around 2,000 jobs will be created.
