The anti-violence program StoP – partner-free violence area will open 17 new sites over the next two years. At the beginning of September, preventive community work to protect women and children began in two other districts of Vienna, Neubau and Alsergrund. Burgenland, Graz and Salzburg are currently preparing expansions, a news conference in Vienna said on Wednesday.

According to a press release, Social Affairs Minister Johannes Rauch (Green Party) said: “Regardless of age, women experience the majority of violence at home, within their own four walls. Violence against women almost always comes from men. “Yet witnesses or first-hand witnesses of violence often remain silent due to fear or uncertainty.” The Ministry of Social Affairs has once again agreed to a funding agreement, which will mean that approximately 3.25 million euros will be provided over the next two years.

“With the support of the Ministry of Social Affairs, StoP will not only continue at its existing locations, but up to 17 additional project locations will be created to further expand the range of services,” said Maja Markanović-Riedl, Managing Director of Autonomous. Austrian Women Association of Shelters (AÖF). Neubau district leader Markus Reiter (Green Party) said: “We have been working on this project for new builders since 2019 and it is even more pleasing that with the further expansion by Social Minister Rauch it is now available in District 7 launched. Alsergrund district leader Saya Ahmad said: “Our district’s co-funding of StoP districts free of intimate partner violence shows that we are meeting our obligations and taking positive action to combat male violence. “This project is an investment in the civic courage and security of our people.

StoP Austria Coordinator Christina Kopf from the AÖF looks back on the past almost six years: At the beginning of 2019, a pilot program was launched in Margaritaen Vienna with funding from the Vienna Health Promotion and Healthy Austria Funds. A further 12 locations were opened in June 2021 with funding from the Ministry of Social Affairs. A year later, the program was fully expanded: the violence prevention program was extended to a further 10 locations and has since been implemented in all federal states, bringing the total to 30 locations.

The goal is to engage the entire community in an active campaign against domestic violence: in the program years June 2023 to May 2024, more than 270 neighbors and more than 600 program partners are involved in StoP. Some 1,500 interested persons were trained in anti-violence workshops and more than 460 men participated in activities to prevent violence against women.
