The clash erupts in San Macuto. The 5 Star Movement, aware that the vote to force its PMs to abstain due to incompatibility is now imminent, goes on the counterattack during the sessions in which they are involved due to their previous activity: «They are targeting Federico Cafiero De Raho and Roberto Scarpinato – comments the former Prime Minister and leader of the Five Star Movement Giuseppe Conte -. Here the order of things is being completely reversed. They even prepared an amendment to throw them out of the commission. We will never allow something like this. And be careful, because if the majority with the strength of numbers, the dictatorship of the majority, even uses this strength to wage war against the government’s opponents, a precedent is created which definitively pollutes the democratic political debate. We will fight at all levels to ensure that such an obscene rule never passes.” In this sense, the M5s also releases a note in which it speaks of “manipulation to build alleged conflicts of interest on the basis of which to oust inconvenient people”. A crusade on which even the democratic allies converge.
This was announced by the group leader in the PD Commission. Walter Verini: «Yesterday in the Anti-Mafia Presidency Office – he highlights – the president hypothesized about changing the founding law to prevent the participation of members of the same on certain topics in the case of (alleged, hypothetical, generic, according to the proposal) conflicts of interest and incompatibility. We are against it. First of all, the suspicion is that it arises by aiming at specific targets, such as the former anti-mafia magistrates Cafiero De Raho and Scarpinato, who have long been attacked, not surprisingly, by the right. There is, then, the serious risk of preventing a parliamentarian from exercising his mandate, as provided for by the Constitution, on the basis of unacceptable majority decisions and logic. This is why we opposed the proposal which risks creating an even more difficult climate within the Commission.”
The majority, meanwhile, carries on and does not intend to waste any more time. According to internal sources, as early as today, there could be a vote to ensure that former prosecutors no longer participate in sessions concerning events in which they were directly involved. The centre-right, meanwhile, does not accept the accusations made by the head of the Movement: «Conte – replies Maurizio Gasparri, group leader of Forza Italia at Palazzo Madama – not only no longer agrees with Beppe Grillo on the fact of opening Parliament as a little box, but he became the king of the caste. We want transparency on the behavior of Scarpinato and De Raho and we believe that those who must be subject to checks cannot also be their own judge. It is a very clear regulatory principle that even a modest jurist like Conte will understand, sooner or later.”
