This is RTBF information, associations and the cultural world are gathering in Mons to denounce the regular attacks they have been the target of in recent months by far-right groups.
“At each of our events or activities, they are present with placards and slogans. They are threatening“, explains Cédric Devriese, member of the antifascist platform Mons, recently created. “NoWe are obliged to be careful, to monitor calls for hatred on social networks… We have decided to continue and to be numerous at each activity.“
Last March, during the world day once morest racism, things got out of hand: “They got violent”adds Cédric Devriese, “a person from the far-right group assaulted a youth from the anti-racism movement. A complaint has been filed and the police are continuing their investigation.“.
The platform now brings together associations fighting once morest discrimination, but also unions, theaters and even citizen collectives.
The members of the anti-fascist front also denounce an increasingly important presence of the extreme right in the colleges and universities of Mons: “They target young people, put up posters in the hallways. They seek to be visible everywhere and to give a polished and demonized image, as does the Vlaams Belang or the French National Rally.“
Following these events, the platform decides to submit a motion to the city of Mons, so that it becomes an anti-fascist city. The motion was tabled at the municipal council on May 30. It was well received by the PS-Ecolo majority: “We will set up a working group“, explains Nicolas Martin, mayor of Mons”The motion as filed must be corrected at the margin for legal matters. But we will move forward with the working group which will associate the college, the parties which wish it and the platform”, further adds the burgomaster.
