Anti-electricity cuts demonstration stopped by the police in Yaoundé

On March 19, 2023, a peaceful demonstration organized by the Honorable Cabral Libii, Member of the National Assembly and President of the Cameroonian Party for National Reconciliation (Pcrn), was prevented by an impressive police and military deployment at the esplanade of the Yaounde Omnisports Stadium. The purpose of this demonstration was to denounce the recurrent power cuts.

From 8 a.m., more than 50 police and gendarmerie vehicles crisscrossed the esplanade, preventing the usual Sunday sportsmen from accessing the places of relaxation. The police have asked citizens to return home, under penalty of arrest.

The declaration of this peaceful demonstration had been filed on March 10, 2023 at the sub-prefecture of Yaoundé 5th, but the sub-prefect had invoked the risk of disturbing public order and disruption to the free movement of people and goods. to justify its ban.

Despite the significant security measures deployed at the Omnisports esplanade, four PCRN deputies and a few activists managed to regroup in another district of the city. They briefly demonstrated before the police joined them and ended their rally.
