A few days ago, anti-abortion slogans were spray-painted on walls in Louvain-la-Neuve, near the Grand-Place, by a “pro life” collective. We might notably read “abortion = crime” or even “abortion stops one heart and breaks another”. As RTBF explains, these tags were quickly erased or transformed into pro-abortion slogans. However, this case outraged many students.
Comac, young PTB, lamented that in 2023 “it is still possible to walk around Louvain-la-Neuve and see deeply sexist inscriptions. As long as this kind of act happens and as long as sexism and attacks on women’s rights continue, we will continue to fight together once morest sexism.”
The Student Union, close to the FGTB, also reacted on Instagram. “No to far-right ideas on our campus! Abortion is a fundamental right! Support for women everywhere who are fighting for their rights.”
Invited to react by the RTBF, the AGL, which represents the students of the Louvain-la-Neuve campus, estimated that with the upcoming elections, “this kind of action will start to multiply. We will have to react by informing the students so that they can vote in an informed way”.
As a reminder, in Belgium, abortion is legally authorized provided that it takes place before the 12th week following conception. Debates are still ongoing on the extension of this deadline. The Socialists, Liberals, Ecologists, Défi and PTB want to extend it to 18 weeks while the more reluctant CD&V would agree to extend it to 14 weeks.
