Venezuelan right fielder Anthony Santander showed his power on Tuesday in Major League Baseball (MLB), after hitting a home run to reach 44 in a season in which he confirmed his status as an offensive star for the Baltimore Orioles.
The outfielder hit a solo home run in the sixth inning and helped the Birds win 5-3 on the road over the New York Yankees in a match between American League East Division powers.
The native of Nuevo Esparto was five homers away from equaling the record for most homers by a Creole in a single tournament (49), established by third baseman Eugenio Suárez in 2019, when he played for the Cincinnati Reds. If the eastern player wants to equal or surpass that record, he will have to increase his production of four homers, since the regular round will conclude on Sunday.
Gardener’s work
Santander, 29, finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored, one RBI and one walk in a game at Yankee Stadium. After the game, he has a .235 average in a game in which he has 100 RBIs.
For the losers, Caracas second baseman Gleyber Torres stood out by going 3-for-4 with one RBI, his 63rd of a season in which he has a .257 batting average.
His teammate Oswaldo Cabrera came in as a pinch runner for first baseman Anthony Rizzo and was unable to cross the plate. He still has a batting average of .267.
Serpentiners in action
Pitcher Dean Kremer (8-10) earned the win, Clarke Schmidt (5-5) suffered the loss and Seranthony Dominguez (11) earned the save.
Baltimore improved its record to 87-70 and is second in the eastern zone of the young circuit, where New York is the leader with a balance of 92-65.
The Bronx Bombers have already qualified for the postseason, which will begin in October. The Maryland Birds will also participate in that stage, trying to take the divisional crown from the New Yorkers.
