World champion Usyk relinquishes belt

Joshua has been world champion twice, and twice he has been bitterly dethroned. The time of the man who had sent Wladimir Klitschko into retirement in 2017 and was supposed to be the next Muhammad Ali seemed to be over.

But with four convincing victories in a row, the 34-year-old, who has 28 wins and three losses in 31 fights, has once again earned a world championship fight. This was made possible by the previously undisputed world champion Alexander Usyk giving up his IBF belt in order to fight the big rematch against Tyson Fury at the end of the year. Dubois, previously IBF interim champion, was promoted to regular world champion.

Joshua: “I’m ready to fight”

Strictly speaking, Joshua is the challenger in the British duel. But against the 27-year-old Dubois, who has won 21 of his 23 fights (two losses), everyone is only looking at “AJ”. As a three-time heavyweight world champion, he would be on a par with boxing greats such as Ali, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis. “It’s good to be back,” said Joshua: “I’m ready to fight and remind everyone what I’m capable of.”

In the past, he lost all his temper when he met Dubois. The former boxing world champion warned that he would “pull this chair over his opponent’s face” if the latter did not stop provoking him. After a brief argument, both fighters jumped up and had to be separated by their promoters. Now, almost three months after this memorable interview, they are meeting again in the ring.

Will there be a big showdown in the future?

While Joshua (2021 and 2022) and Dubois (2023) have both lost to Usyk in the past, the winner of the fight could face another showdown with the Ukrainian. Or with Fury. British boxing fans have been longing for the big clash between Joshua and the “Gypsy King” for years.
