According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco to end the conflict around the Sahara is an approach that meets the needs and aspirations of the people of the Sahara.
“We see Morocco’s autonomy plan as a credible, serious and realistic plan. It is an approach that can meet the needs and aspirations of the populations of the Sahara”, assured Anthony Blinken in an interview granted to the Medi1 TV channel, and relayed by MAP. The American official expressed his country’s support for the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General, Staffan de Mistura, in the conduct of the political process on the Sahara issue, under the auspices of the United Nations.

“There is very important work carried out by the special envoy of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Staffan de Mistura, which we support. We discussed it today with my colleague and my friend Nasser Bourita. We will follow up in the weeks to come,” said the US Secretary of State. Regarding the appointment of Puneet Talwar by President Joe Biden as the new ambassador of the United States to Morocco, Anthony Blinken stressed that the new ambassador, whose appointment should still be approved by the Senate, will be “an exceptional ambassador for the United States and for the ties between our two countries”.
“He’s a longtime friend, we’ve worked together for 20 years, he’s someone very close to President Biden. I have complete confidence in him and especially President Biden, ”he assured. “Coming here to this remarkable country is a great opportunity,” he said. According to him, the voice and diplomacy of Morocco have a very important impact in the management of many issues and challenges at the regional and global levels.

“Our partnership with Morocco, which has existed for a long time, is of greater importance to us because we obviously act on bilateral issues, but we also act at the regional and global level”, indicated Anthony Blinken. He also pointed out that the Kingdom has made major progress in managing the climate crisis, adding that the Morocco-USA partnership acts not only in the region but also at the global level. As a reminder, the American Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, is making an official visit to Morocco from March 28 to 30 under the sign of “commitment to security and prosperity”.
