Antelope and meerkat babies at Schmiding Zoo

The Schmiding Zoo in Krenglbach near Wels is happy to welcome new meerkats and dik-dik antelopes. The baby meerkats, who spent the first days of their lives in the cave, are now venturing outside and cuddling with their mother in the autumn sun. The little antelope also goes out to explore the outdoor area from time to time.

“The young dik-diks are offshoots, which means that for most of the day the little one lies quietly in a corner, looking around with its big eyes,” says zookeeper Selina Wiener. The baby dik-dik – this species of antelope is one of the smallest in the world – hardly makes any noise and has no smell of its own, which means it would be well protected from predators in the wild. Every now and then the little one dares to go into the outdoor enclosure and can be observed by visitors with a little patience.
