Antarctica’s Shrinking Ice Shelves: 40% Lost Since 1997 – Study Highlights

AThe discovery that more than 40 percent of Antarctica’s giant ice shelves (ice shelves) have shrunk significantly since 1997. Half of these are irretrievably lost. The study report, which includes the findings collected with the help of satellites, is published in the journal Scientific Advances. Climate-related changes are believed to be behind this.

Researchers at the University of Leeds are behind the discovery. Antarctica has lost 7.5 trillion tonnes of ice since 1997. Warm water in the western region has caused snow melt. But there was no significant change in the amount of snow in the eastern region.

Researchers have used more than 100,000 satellite images to understand the health of the giant ice sheets. Heavy melting of ice in Antarctica is expected to indirectly affect other regions around the world.
