In view of the complementarity of their missions and their actions on the epidemiological surveillance of shellfish and fish and in terms of food safety from these sectors, Ifremer and ANSES have undertaken to strengthen collaboration at the been working for several years. As part of this new agreement, they will strive to adopt a more cross-cutting approach to issues, in the spirit of the “One Health” concept – which unifies human, animal and environmental health – to co-construct projects around, for example, the marine exposome, health and environmental risks related to microplastics or antibiotic resistance.

Signatories of the charter of openness to society, the two organizations also wish to concretely translate their commitment through joint communication actions and the deployment of participatory approaches within joint projects.

This partnership also aims to strengthen the support to public authorities provided by the two organisations. As part of the first agreement entered into in 2018, Ifremer and ANSES had already pooled some of their skills, for example those relating to the toxin emergence monitoring network. This network makes it possible to prevent the presence in shellfish of the main groups of biotoxins listed at international level, and contributes to the assessment of the associated risks. Future collaborations may go beyond this well-identified area of marine biotoxins to extend to chemical and microbiological contaminants.

It also involves increasing Ifremer’s involvement in ANSES’s calls for projects, and ensuring proper dissemination within the two bodies of the respective recommendations and research results. The scientific staff of the two establishments are also encouraged to take part in the expert bodies and working groups that they lead as part of their respective missions.

For François Houllier, Chairman and CEO of Ifremer:

« This new agreement is the natural continuation of our collaboration that began 5 years ago, which led us to develop common methods for detecting bacteria, viruses – in particular SARS-CoV-2 – or parasites in marine organisms, or even to acquire new knowledge on the contamination of seafood products by microplastics, to name but a few examples. Ifremer works every day to better understand and assess the health of the marine environment. It is essential that this knowledge be shared with ANSES to help protect human health ».

For Benoit Vallet, Director General of ANSES:

« Extending and strengthening the privileged partnership that we have with Ifremer will consolidate the strong synergies and complementarities between our teams. Beyond our joint work on the health of shellfish and fish and for the health of consumers, this framework agreement also offers the opportunity to concretely translate the commitments of our two establishments in favor of openness to society. This will result in actions such as joint feedback days, the integration of participatory science and research approaches into our joint projects or the strengthening of the contribution to public debate on our themes. »

The signing of this framework partnership agreement enables Ifremer and ANSES to combine their skills in eight areas with major health implications:

• Marine biotoxins
• Organic and inorganic chemical contaminants
• Microplastics
• Marine and anthropogenic bacteria
• Viruses in food
• Fish parasites
• Shellfish health
• Fish health
