Judoka Anriquelis Barrios will replace Yulimar Rojas as Venezuela’s flag bearer in the parade of nations during the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

It was learned that Barrios will accompany weightlifter Julio Mayora, instead of the Olympic athletics champion. The official list of flag bearers was published in the Olympics.com website.

It had previously been announced that Rojas would be one of Venezuela’s flag bearers, despite the fact that she will not be able to participate in her discipline due to an injury.

Rojas’ team released a statement on April 12 explaining that the athlete had an injury to her left Achilles heel.

The Olympic triple jump champion underwent surgery on April 11 at the Cemtro Clinic in Madrid, Spain. However, the athlete was to accompany the rest of the delegation to the opening ceremony.

Who is Anriquelis Barrios?

Judoka Anriquelis Barrios qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on June 25 of this year, after placing 31st in the world ranking in her category. Barrios will compete in the 63-kilogram women’s judo discipline.

“After such a difficult year full of obstacles, many injuries, two surgeries, slow rehabilitation processes, we managed to overcome all the adversity in our path, physically and mentally; we never gave up, we set a goal and we achieved the objective we always wanted with hard work,” Barrios said after qualifying.

The judoka is ranked number 28 on the official list of Venezuelans who will participate in the Olympic Games.

Barrios made her first appearance at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020. On that occasion, she finished fifth in her category, so she was unable to compete for a place on the Olympic podium.
