It is an Anouar Zehouani, delighted to return to the fold following long years of absence, whom we met, in the company of his sidekick Mohamed Laâbidi, better known by the nickname Oubize, for a discussion of the most relaxed possible, at Essaouira, during the Gnaoua and World Music Festival 2023.
A few hours before their production on stage, the Hoba Hoba Spirit group is doing everything possible to be present at the annual meeting of this festival. This edition is even more special for this band, since its founding members find themselves together. They count on the public with whom they recharge their batteries and they return it well.
For their songs, they are inspired by their daily lives and draw their strength from the diversity of origin of each of them. “The advantage of Hoba is that each member brings their little touch, whether it’s the region where they were born, their musical tastes, or their daily life. Abdessamad and Saad are fans of metal, Reda of punk and rock, Oubize of gnaoua, and myself of raï… it’s an enrichment in itself”, delighted to detail Anouar Zehouani.
For them, the richness of music lies in its diversity. Meeting people and mixing styles allows Moroccan music to flourish. Fusion should not take away the soul of Gnaoui art. Quite the contrary. According to Oubize: “This musical and cultural mix between the Gnaoua maâlems and other groups is one of the best ideas of this festival”.
They are still discreet regarding their future projects. “There are things brewing. For the moment we are taking our time”.
