Patras, the city with a rich cultural heritage, will spend the second winter in a row without its theatrical heart, the “Apollo” Municipal Theater. The jewel of the city, which has been offering spectacle and art since 1872, will remain closed for another season as necessary restoration work progresses, but at a slow and complicated pace.
In the fall of 2023, the Ministry of Culture and the DIPETHE of Patras announced that additional studies and work were needed on the iconic theater, making the space non-functional and dangerous for the public. With crews proceeding with the necessary investigations and the timetable still unclear, the city’s wait for Apollo’s return is lengthening.
As everything shows, this year will also follow the tactics of last year, with DIPETHE looking for accommodation in other theater stages of the city.
In fact, at a recent meeting of the Board of Directors of DIPETHE, the president of the Theater, Lydia Karathanasopoulou, informed the members that in a communication she had with the Achaean Deputy Minister of Culture Jason Fotila, he told her that a grant would be given to DIPETHE, as the work on Apollo is not expected to start immediately. so that they can proceed with the rental of theater spaces for the presentation of the performances.
Municipal circles, in response to pelop.gr’s question about what is happening with the Municipal Theater of Apollo and where exactly we are, noted that we are in the final stage of the studies, for which the Ministry of the Interior is responsible, with the Municipality of Patreon also awaiting more detailed information . Essentially, this is the same thing that the mayor Kostas Peletidis had mentioned during a recent meeting of the Municipal Council, who, as he had said, in response to a question from Petros Psoma: “We are in the final stage of the studies. Services are planned to be moved to the theater and the Palace of Speech and Art. The ground floor and the first floor of the Mansion will be parts of the theater as foyers or auxiliary spaces. The studies will show that the budget of the project will be large. Who will bear the costs that will be shaped by the studies? For this answer, a discussion with the Ministry of Culture is pending because the money must be found.”
The hiatus of the theater leaves a great void in the heart of the city. “Apollo”, with its special architecture and long history, is not just a cultural space – it is a symbol of paternal identity, cultural heritage and community. The silence that prevails in its corridors and halls is a reminder of the need for immediate action and support from the relevant agencies. With 150 years of continuous operation, “Apollo” deserves this new beginning, and Patras is eagerly waiting to see the theater open its doors again, bringing back the pulse of artistic creation in the heart of the city.
