Another storm with mudslides in Tyrol

Heavy rain, storms and sometimes hail – that’s what the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) predicted for parts of Tyrol from Monday followingnoon: They might be severe, especially near the main Alpine ridge. According to the ZAMG, this might increase the risk of damage in the already contaminated areas south of the Inn. Only last Friday there were floods and mudflows in the Stubaital.

And indeed, on Monday evening there were numerous fire brigade operations there, as the Stubaital section fire brigade commander, Karl Pajk, confirmed when asked by KURIER. Neustift in the Stubaital is once more most affected. “A few mudslides have gone off once more. The State road from Schaller is locked. The Ruetz, our main river, is pretty close to the border,” Pajk describes the situation around 10 p.m. Large mudflows have also occurred in the Obernberg valley. The streams that burst their banks on Friday are still calm.

There was another landslide on the lower bridge in Schönberg. The fire brigade also had to move out in the Vent valley, where a debris flow also triggered. The emergency services also removed fallen trees in Jenbach and Schwaz.

“The situation is stable, but you can’t say what the night will bring. Right now it’s not raining,” said Pajk.

caution

Due to the current weather forecast, Elmar Rizzoli, head of the crisis and hazard management department of the state of Tyrol, appealed to the population on Monday morning to exercise caution and “for example, to avoid driving or walking that are not absolutely necessary or to distance oneself from endangered areas such as watercourses keep”. No injuries were known as of Monday around 10 p.m.

Pajk continued to call on the population to be reasonable: “Increased caution applies. Don’t stay near a stream or on bridges. We keep seeing onlookers walking near the bank with lamps. That’s negligent.” Because debris flows can also be delayed.

Meanwhile, the search for the pastor who was missing following severe storms in the Tyrolean Stubaital on Friday evening remained unsuccessful. The stream bed of the Ruetz was searched on Monday, and once more only parts of his car were found.

From west to east

Late on Monday evening, the thunderstorm finally spread to the east towards Salzburg. There were no major incidents there for the time being, it said around 11 p.m. on request from the Salzburg State Fire Brigade Association. One was only alerted to a smaller storm operation.
