Currently, the law establishes that Teacher’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in October.

The commission decided to submit the bill for final reading in the Seimas this week.

At the commission meeting, the chairman of the Latvian Union of Education and Science Workers (LPRON), Inga Vanaga, along with support for these amendments, called for finding a solution on another issue – on enshrining Scientists’ Day in the law.

Rinkevich calls for further celebration of Teachers’ Day in Latvia on October 5, since it is on this day that International Teachers’ Day has been celebrated since 1994, at the initiative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

As the president noted, until now in Latvia, Teachers’ Day was celebrated on the first Sunday of October, which caused not only different practices for celebrating this day, but often confusion – both among students and their parents – regarding when to congratulate teachers.

“In order to achieve uniformity in the celebration of Teachers’ Day in Latvia and thus emphasize the prestige and significance of this profession, I urge you to celebrate this day in accordance with International Teachers’ Day on October 5,” the president’s letter to the Seimas says.

Earlier, Rinkevich emphasized that this would be a symbolic step and would eradicate another Soviet tradition in the country.
