On Tuesday, the National Hockey League (NHL) presented him with the honor which rewards the player who has best shown the example by his qualities of leadership on the ice and outside, while making a significant community contribution.
Recognized for his philanthropic commitment, particularly with the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation, number 76 created a foundation in his name in 2014 to help children around the world. More recently, his efforts have raised donations for patients battling cancer in Ukraine, a country ravaged by the Russian invasion.
It was the third consecutive year that Subban has been in the running for the King-Clancy Trophy, but the first time that he has been the recipient. This time around, he was competing once morest Darnell Nurse of the Edmonton Oilers and Ryan Getzlaf, who retired following playing with the Anaheim Ducks for 17 years.
“When you volunteer in your community, you don’t do it to receive trophies,” said Subban, whose comments were reported by nhl.com. But when I look at the players who have been finalists for this award, it’s a special group. I think when you have a platform like the NHL, you have to use it the right way to make an impact, and I was lucky to be able to do that. All of the finalists this year and in previous years, and the players who won it all did a great job. I am very happy to be part of this group and to continue my work.”
Recall that each NHL team had submitted the name of a player for this award; on the Canadian side, goaltender Jake Allen was the selected athlete.
