Another death shook the crypto ecosystem

Bob Lee, creator of the Cash App and former chief technology officer of Square, has died after being stabbed by an unknown assailant.

Bob Lee, Square’s former chief technology officer and creator of the Cash App, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco on Tuesday, April 4.

Bill BarhydtCEO of crypto wallet company Abra, tweeted on April 5 that Bob Lee “killed early this morning in SF”, sharing a report from a local media outlet that reported Lee’s death but did not name him.

Jack Dorsey also confirmed Lee’s death on decentralized social media platform Nostr. “This is real. We get a call. Heartbreaking” – reads the screenshot of Dorsey’s post.

According to an April 4 news release from the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), officers responded to a report of a stabbing at approximately 2:35 a.m. local time and found a “A 43-year-old male victim was found with apparent stab wounds”adding:

“The police provided assistance and called ambulances to the scene. The victim was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of first responders and medical personnel, the victim succumbed to his injuries.”

Former UFC fighter Jake Shields tweeted one on April 5th “good friend” of his murder in a shady neighborhood in San Francisco. He later revealed that it was Lee.

SFPD said Lee’s death is being investigated as a homicide. It is understood that no arrests have been made so far.

Lee was the product manager of MobileCoin, the creator of the private coin of the same name.

He became known in the tech industry for being the first CTO of Dorsey’s payment platform Square, later renamed Block, and for creating the popular mobile payment service Cash App.

Lee was a fan of cryptocurrencies and when he joined MobileCoin in December 2021, he said in a statement that “the traditional financial system leaves behind hundreds of millions of unbanked people worldwide and consequently excludes them from the associated benefits”.
