Annual Conference of Occupational and Environmental Health: Key Topics and Provincial Regulations

On Friday the 25th, it was held at the Hospital Escuela of Acute “Dr. Ramón Madariaga” the Annual Conference of the Occupational and Environmental Section, organized by the Argentine Association of Respiratory Medicine. These conferences were also declared of Provincial Interest by the House of Representatives of the Province of Misiones.

In this sense, Dr. Susana Azcona, Head of the Pulmonology Service of the Hospital Escuela and Coordinator of the Occupational and Environmental Section of the Argentine Association of Respiratory Medicine (Aamr), highlighted: “These annual conferences are held every year in different provinces; This year it was held here in Misiones, specifically at the Hospital Escuela. The idea was to be able to address the different issues related to both occupational and environmental health in our region.as well as the specific environmental problems of the region.”

Likewise, the professional gave details of the issues that were discussed. ANDn the first module “Occupational disease: from the clinical history to the images”, the neonatologist, occupational physician and expert Raquel Pendito, presented cases of patients with occupational disease that even had evolution and resolution of the pathology.

in the module “Infections in rurality”, the infectious disease doctor at the Hospital Escuela, doctor Pedro Villalba Apestegui, presented cases of leptospirosis and paracoccidioidomycosis, frequent pathologies that usually have hospitalization and even critical evolutions. Then, in the “Pesticide and Lung” module, they reported on the impact of the pesticide on both respiratory health and other systems.

In the last module, “Environment and smoking”, reference was made to secondhand and thirdhand smoke and how much it affects respiratory health, as well as its impact on vulnerable populations. The theme of forest fires and the impact on respiratory health was also presented in this module.

In relation to these issues, the importance of provincial regulations for the care and health of the missionary population was discussed. The Provincial Law of Wetlands (XVI – No. 146 Regulatory framework for wetlands), on the one hand, presented by the Deputy Julio Barreto fulfilled mandate, provides, among other things, “carry out the control, reduction or elimination of activities, processes, activities or components of the environment that cause or may cause harm to the environment and human health (…)”. It should be noted that Misiones is the only province in the country with a law of these characteristics.

On the other hand, they stressed the importance of the Provincial Registry of Pathologies Derived from Environmental Pollution and Climate Change, which is intended not only to have a record of said pathologies for statistical purposes, but also to promote awareness among the general population. regarding these pathologies.

And finally, the Law on Smoke-Free Spaces in Protected Natural Areas (LAW XVI – No. 147), which provides that protected areas such as parks and provincial natural reserves are smoke-free, prohibiting smoking in them, to preserve and improve the air and water quality, prevent forest fires and promote healthy habits.

Both professionals and officials from the province participated in the Conference, as well as doctors and specialists from all over the country. As a result of this, Dr. Azcona highlighted: “We have the presence of specialists from all over Argentina; it was very productive. The specialists of the Hospital Escuela nurtured and learned a lot, in addition to presenting cases and legal framework related to health and the environment in our region. It was a good opportunity to show how much work is being done in the province in terms of public health, not only us as medical professionals but also officials and representatives, who are the ones who promote bills like the ones mentioned.”
