The Citizenship and Immigration Services of USA (USCIS) announced this Tuesday that the automatic extension of work permits will be increased to 540 days, which will benefit many migrants residing in that country, including Venezuelan citizens.

The measure only applies to those categories of work permits that are currently eligible for an automatic extension of up to 180 days. That is, up to 360 days of additional time, for a total of up to 540 days, will be temporarily provided to eligible applicants with a timely extension.

“This time frame will allow USCIS the opportunity to address staffing shortages, implement additional efficiencies, and meet the recently announced goal of achieving a three-month cycle time for work permit applications by the end of FY23. », indicated the agency.

Effective October 27, 2023, automatic extensions of employment authorization and work permit validity will return to the period of up to 180 days for eligible applicants who timely file Form I-765 renewal applications.

The automatic extension will generally end with notification of a final decision on the renewal application or the end of the period of up to 540 days.
