October 29, 2023 local time is the first anniversary of the stampede in Itaewon, Seoul. On that day, a large number of people came to the “10·29 Memory and Safety Road” to mourn the victims of the Itaewon stampede one year ago.

The alley near Exit 1 of Itaewon Subway Station was the site of the accident a year ago and became a space of mourning following the disaster. On the first anniversary of the Itaewon accident, the Seoul City Government named this alley the “10·29 Memory and Safety Road.”

A reporter from China News Service saw that the wall at the entrance of the alley was covered with sticky notes, which read, “I hope you rest in peace in heaven and be happy anywhere in the universe.” “I will never forget it! I hope this will never happen once more.” Kind of thing” and other condolence words. The walls were filled with flowers, soju and snacks.

At regarding 9:20, many monks wearing monk’s robes held a mourning ceremony at the entrance of the alley. At regarding 13 o’clock, the flow of people near the mourning place increased. The families of the victims who came to pay their respects might not suppress their grief and might not leave for a long time. Pedestrians passing by stopped to pay their respects, offered flowers, or wrote condolences on post-it notes and pasted them on the wall to express their condolences.

At regarding 14:00 that day, pre-memorial activities including a religious prayer meeting were held at Exit 1 of Itaewon Subway Station. It is reported that following the prayer meeting, the victims’ families and other event participants will march along Exit 1 of Itaewon Subway Station, pass in front of the Yongsan Presidential Room and other places to arrive at Exit 5 of Subway City Hall Station, and hold a formal memorial ceremony at 5 p.m. The meeting mourned the victims and urged the government to punish those responsible for the accident.
