Abyss Pt. I
(Metalcore | Postcore)
Label: Arising Empire
Format: (EP)
Release: 22.09.2023
Actually, I follow the German gentlemen ANNISOKAY around fronter, guitarist, mastermind and producer Christoph Wieczorek, who has also been a welcome Alex Reed with genre-related groups since their 2012 debut “The Lucid Dreame[r]“. The phenomenon didn’t really take off for me in the first few years; the emo core of the gentlemen from Saxony-Anhalt was often too corny and shallow for me. That’s why I missed the last album “Aurora” from 2021, which even entered the German album charts at number 18.
With the new EP “Abyss Pt. I” and the singles that have been released so far, I then became curious once more. And so now the 6-track EP is in front of me and it surprised me.
Basically, ANNISOKAY still stands for emotional Metal/Emo/Post-Core laced with synths, but the material seems more mature, intense and adult today than in the early days. And so the gentlemen from Saxony-Anhalt, who have already had numerous line-up changes, now manage to inspire me too. Since 2019, in addition to singer Christoph, there has also been a new screamer, Rudi Schwarzer, and he has a huge voice. And he also uses this skillfully in the most recently released single “Throne Of The Sunset”. Pressing riffs, dense atmosphere framed by the synthesizer and a dark voice set the basic tone. The guitar work is technically demanding, the song is full of details, Rudi roars angrily and deeply, while the mastermind inspires with haunting, emotional singing.
But the EP starts no less impressively with the titular intro “Into The Abyss”. The instrumental sets the direction skillfully and continues to increase. It’s just a shame that the partly dreamy “Human” doesn’t take the drive straight away, but follows its own structure. But it’s no less interesting, e-drums and calm vocals invite you until the song develops into an intense and emotionally charged anthem. The remaining material also shares these trademarks in various ways, whereas the short “Calamity” stands out in particular.
This hit primarily features clean vocals and poppy beats that are surprisingly reminiscent of THE WEEKND’s hit “Blinding Lights”. The song might play up and down on alternative radio in the future, because ANNISOKAY have managed the feat of not becoming too cheesy or cheesy and deliver a real hit. But the rest of the material on the EP, which I don’t have to talk regarding much anymore since all but one song has already been released as a single, is fun, shows a mature and focused band and absolutely makes you want to play the second part as well upcoming tour with SAMURAI PIZZA CATS, which starts in October.
