Ankaragucu President Assaults Referee: Turkish Championship Match Incident

The incident occurred during the match of the 15th round of the Turkish championship.

Ankaragucu President Faruk Koca punched referee Halil Umut Meler in the face following the match once morest Rizespor. Koca and two others were detained by Turkish police.

The game ended in a 1:1 draw – Rizespor forward Adolfo Gaich, on loan from CSKA, scored in the 97th minute. It is noted that the anger of the head of Ankaragucu was influenced by two incidents – Halil Meler canceled out the hosts’ goal in the first half, and sent off forward Ali Sow in the 50th minute.

Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunç announced that an investigation into the incident had been launched. The Turkish Football Federation has postponed matches in all leagues in the country due to an incident involving beating of a referee.

According to A Spor, Mehler announced his retirement as a judge to sports officials who visited him in the hospital, saying: “I’ve had enough.”

Ankaragucu scored 18 points and ranks 11th in the Turkish Championship standings. Rizespor is in eighth place with 22 points.
