An escalation of aggression on the part of Turkey is observed after the announcement by Greece of the creation of two marine parks in the Ionian and Aegean seas.
Sources of the Ministry of Defense Turkey state that they are on alert to “protect our rights, interests and benefits in the Aegean and prevent Greece’s attempts to impose a unilateral regime” in relation to the marine parks.
According to a report in the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, sources in the Ministry of Defense of the neighbor gave the following answer to journalists’ questions about Greece’s attempt to declare marine parks:
“On April 8, 2024, it was announced by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs that two large marine parks will be declared in the Aegean and the Ionian Seas. Our Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken the necessary diplomatic initiatives regarding the parks that are planned to be declared and stated that unilateral actions on the issue of islands, islets and rocks whose sovereignty has not been granted by treaties (EGAYDAAK) will not be accepted and will not be have no legal effect. As a Ministry, we are on alert to protect our rights, interests and benefits in the Aegean and to prevent unilateral attempts to establish a Greek regime.”

At the same time, it casts a heavy shadow over the preparation of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ visit to Turkey.
