“Ankara goes East.” Turkey has applied to BRICS

Turkey wants to join the BRICS grouping, which is an alternative to the Western economic groupings. Turkey has submitted a formal application to join the group of countries (Russia, China, United Arab Emirates, India, etc.). The reason is the strengthening of global influence, frustration with the admission process to the European Union and the establishment of new alliances outside the traditional Western states.

The bloc is set to discuss expansion at an October summit in the Russian Federation, writes the agency Bloomberg.

The BRICS organization, which was created as an alternative to the Western economic blocs, consists of the founding countries of Russia, China, South Africa, Brazil and India, with the subsequent additions of Iran, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia. Bloomberg adds that the alliance is often seen as “pro-Russian” and “anti-Western.” BRICS strongly promotes trading in the national currencies of member countries, such as the Russian ruble or the Chinese yuan. It is the Russian Federation and China that dominate the alliance, which has long been trying to reduce the influence of the dollar on international trade.

Among the main reasons is the search for new allies in the East and the strengthening of global Turkish influence. Ankara also criticizes the European Union for prolonging and complicating Turkey’s entry into the EU. At the end of July, the domestic foreign minister, Jan Lipavský, discussed this topic with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan. The head of Turkish diplomacy stated that Turkey is grateful to the Czech Republic for supporting its efforts to join the EU. He also expressed hope that the war in Ukraine will be ended through peaceful negotiations, noting that war crimes are taking place in the Gaza Strip every day.

Anti-Western currents in Turkey intensified after the bloody war between Israel and the Hamas terrorist movement broke out. The country of the crescent moon has been supporting Palestine for a long time. Similar differences can also be seen between the West and Turkey in their view of the armed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. While Western countries support Armenia, Turkey is a strong ally of Azerbaijan. Turkey’s possible rapprochement with China and Russia could fundamentally affect and cool relations with NATO and the EU. In any case, it is certain that it would significantly change the balance of power in the entire region.
