Anita B Queen, the DJ who connected with Bizarrap and Skrillex, enjoys a new return to Córdoba

Two moments that marked the life of the DJ and performer musical Anita B Queen in recent months. The first, a musical crush on Skrillex and a mythical joint presentation in the preview of Lollapalooza Argentina that led to 10 days with the producer in São Paulo, Brazil. The second, the opening of the three concerts given by Bizarrap –one of the many fans of Anita in the cream of the industry– at the Palermo Hippodrome and in what was her debut as a soloist.

The one and the other have to do with the same thing. Ever since she crossed Ca7riel’s path, everything began to happen faster (and more furious) in the life of this 26-year-old artist who, since she was little and even in a context of childhood that was not at all idyllic, knew that she had to Prepare for big things.

“I always felt a little touched by the wand, since I was a girl. Somehow, deep inside, I always felt that I was being prepared for great things. That’s why when I do something, I do it for real. I give it my all and then I see”, explains Ana Belén Kim, who will return to Córdoba this Saturday to perform for the second time in a few months at the Catharsis Community electronic music cycle/festival.

Anita is a rising figure both for her skill in the booth and for her overwhelming personality on stage. Her return to the same party in which she debuted in November shows that there is plenty of “handle” to return to share the “degenerate” dance ritual proposed by Queen.

“I am very pro of not separating things by style, by genre, by whatever. And that happened to me with Catharsis, I loved it and now that they called me to do a rematch I thought it was incredible”, says the DJ.

According to his account, the return is also special because his own story has to do with Córdoba, the city where he lived for four years in his adolescence and of which he has “very beautiful” memories. “It seems very significant to me because, when I lived in Córdoba, I did not imagine anything of all this that is happening today,” he says, recalling his life in Nueva Córdoba between the ages of 11 and 15, including a period at the Colegio de la immaculate.

“It had already happened to me, when I returned with Cato and Paco, of feeling this that I was going to a place that saw me grow up, where I lived my adolescence. Suddenly, coming back having decided to live the life I’m living, doing what I do, coming back in a very different version of myself, but much better for me, seems to me something beautiful, a merit, it’s like an achievement. It’s a nice feeling”, sums up the DJ.

make a place

When reviewing these last months of great exposure, Anita confirms that everything lived surpassed any dream. “If I had to imagine something of what happens today, it would not have been even close. Skrillex, Ca7riel, Bizarrap, the number one in Argentina, it doesn’t make sense… ”, she lists, still surprised.

Reflecting on this dizzying growth in terms of exposure, the artist of Korean descent inevitably stands out when, at the behest of drummer Tommy Sainz, Catriel Guerreiro contacted her on Instagram to summon her to join his band (which led to her joining the group stable that accompanies Ca7riel and Paco Amoroso). She also goes further and places approximately five years ago the moment in which she herself took charge of what she wanted.

“I never thought that I was going to dedicate myself professionally to music and art,” she says regarding a love that has been around for a long time, but that has only recently consolidated itself as something else in Anita’s worldview in recent years. “Later I got hooked on the whole artistic world, then it was just a hobbybut suddenly I had to take charge of what I wanted”, he explains regarding that “key moment” that opened the first of all the doors that would come.

“It was that moment in which one begins to think that things are getting serious, or if what you are doing is enough for you to dedicate yourself to that. Am I putting everything I have to put to make it work? Yes or no? It is to take charge and act on the basis of that ”, she summarizes her on a process that slowly cooked in her own juice and finished consolidating following the DJ lost her job in a factory in the midst of a pandemic.

Today, when, among various other things (and without having to wander in other areas), he already opened his shows for Harry Styles in River, when he already knows what it is to tame an angry crowd and when he already has several experiences sharing a cabin with contemporary electronic giants like Skrillex or Fred Again, that memory has the flavor of a cinematic moment. But sometimes reality is stranger than fiction. And the case of Anita B. Queen confirms it.

In fact, his path is the faithful expression of what happens when an unusual talent appears in a musical circle that is already prestigious and with a certain amount of demand. Like Fito Páez in The love following Lovethe series, Anita made her own place by dint of charisma and forcefulness at the time of the performance. Since the pandemic began, he went from putting music like hobby to become one of those names that are repeated here and there. Someone capable of making tens of thousands of people dance without leaving aside in the heat of the night under.

—How did you end up opening the Bizarrap shows at the Palermo Hippodrome?

—We started to get to know each other once I entered the Cato and Paco universe. He knew that I was a DJ and he always had an interest in that side. I found out from friends that some of my work had reached him and that he thought I was cool. And with the kids we toured Europe and I got a date in Madrid. There were many Argentines there, the ball spread that I was going to play and when I got to the bowling alley, they told me that Bizarrap was coming. He came with (producer) Evlay, who knew him a little better, and we connected there. It was the first time he saw me live and it seems he liked it. He congratulated me, we got along, we liked each other. And then, when the Skrillex thing happened, Sonny –name of the American DJ– invited me to dinner and there were Biza, Louta and a couple of other people. There we connected once more and I found out that he was a Skrillex ultrafan. When we got back from the San Palbo tour, I wanted to organize a barbecue for him before he left and I invited him to Biza. There he told me that he mightn’t because he was preparing everything for the Hippodrome and out of nowhere he asked me if he wasn’t there to open the shows. I stayed like in shock. Because I readmire him, but out there his environment is not just my universe, I am a weirdo. It was a lot, crazy. And finally it happened.
