The Secretariat of the Environment (Sedema) of Mexico City, through the Animal Care Agency (Agatan), carried out 812 sterilizations of dogs and cats, with and without a guardian, and applied 207 anti-rabies vaccines during the Animal Welfare Days. in the 12 native towns of the Milpa Alta mayor’s office.
The days concluded with the sterilization of 503 pets with guardians and 309 street dogs.
The twelfth Animal Welfare Day was held in the town of San Antonio Tecómitl, where 71 sterilizations were carried out, 52 for companion animals with a guardian and 19 for community animals.
Karina Cortés, founder of Comunidad Pro-canina and member of the Organized Women group, assured that the teamwork between the Animal Care Agency, the Milpa Alta mayor’s office and the area’s protectors “was extraordinary and allowed a result that goes beyond beyond sterilization activities because it was possible to generate social awareness and relevant changes for the well-being of animals.”
Veterinary surgeons from the Animal Care Agency participated in each day, supported by the Mobile Veterinary Unit, as well as veterinary doctors from the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
Carlos Esquivel Lacroix, head of AGATAN, highlighted teamwork and said that “when a common cause is pursued that is not due to any type of ideologies but rather to promote the responsible guardianship of pets, anything is possible. My thanks to Dr. Judith Vanegas Tapia, mayor of the district, to civil society through Karina Cortés, to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics of the UNAM, with its surgery team, its mobile units led by Dr. Diana Covarrubias and, of course, to all the staff of the Animal Care Agency, to the Animal Welfare team, both surgeons and all those who are veterinary zootechnical doctors who collaborate with the Agency in its social service programs, guards clinics, clinical fields, professional practices that did a truly wonderful job during four months of work in the 12 towns.”
The mayor of the Milpa Alta mayor’s office, Judith Vanegas, highlighted that the attention has reached every corner of Milpa Alta and the community’s response has been extraordinary: “I thank each and every one for their active participation in these days. Your commitment is essential to the success of our community initiatives. This is not the end, but the beginning of a continued commitment to animal welfare and the construction of a healthier Milpa Alta. “We will continue working on projects that benefit everyone.”
The Ministry of the Environment reaffirms its commitment to citizens to guarantee their right to a healthy environment and, through the Animal Care Agency, in collaboration with different agencies and mayors’ offices, it will continue working on actions in favor of animal welfare.
