A public hospital in Mexico is bringing in animals to keep mentally challenged patients company. The presence of avian animals, from the Australian parrot to the Siberian husky, ensures the treatment of mental illnesses. They were used to treat nine-year-old Alessia Ramos. Alessia said that through this treatment regimen she was able to reduce her anxiety, manage her emotions, find more comfort and focus.

Alessia sought treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. The facility is set up at the National Center for Mental Health and Palliative Care. Eight dogs are here. It also includes a five-year-old puppy named Harley who lost an eye in an accident. “We follow this system to get rid of the disease faster,” said Lucia Ledesma, a doctor at the hospital.

“Coming into contact with animals creates a lot of psychological changes. It helps reduce stress and anxiety,” said Lucia. Harley was used by the hospital authorities to reduce the mental stress of the hospital staff who were working away from their families for days during the spread of Covid. Harley, who came to the hospital wearing a suit, sandals and glasses to prevent infection, grabbed everyone’s attention.

Lucia added that it was the only animal-assisted intervention in the world in an area affected by Covid-19. Some other hospitals in the world also admit puppies. However, this was the first time in a place affected by Covid. We have received great recognition internationally. Sylvia Hernandez, who served as a nurse in this hospital during the spread of Covid and later faced mental problems, also sought Harley’s help as part of her treatment.

Harley was coming right at me. Sylvia said he behaved as great friends as we had known each other for a long time before. Co-workers might be seen getting emotional and their mental stress reduced with the love and interaction Harley provides to reduce their stress. The hospital now has a self-care and mental health program called Harley and His Friends.

Lucia said the treatment aims to improve mental health, detect and prevent any complications, and intervene in existing problems. She stated that the main reason why dogs are used in this is their ability to interact with humans effortlessly.
