The Regional and Sectoral Secretary for Territorial Development of Antioquia, Juan Pablo López Cortés, will assume from tomorrow Saturday as governor (e) of the department while Aníbal Gaviria Correa takes a few days off until July 10.

The appointment of López, 33, will be ratified in an ordinary session of the Assembly of Antioquia, in which he will be sworn in. With this, the secretary will become the youngest governor in the history of Antioquia since 1885.

Juan Pablo López is a mechanical engineer from the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana. He completed postgraduate studies obtaining a Master’s degree in Applied Economics at the EAFIT University.

His professional career has fluctuated between the public and private sectors, in which he has worked as a planner, structuring agent and director of urban and rural infrastructure projects, mobility, urban transformation and environmental sustainability, such as the Parques del Río Medellín project and public-private partnerships for the Government of Antioquia.

The next governor has also been a technical and financial adviser to different consulting firms on infrastructure, concessions and public contracting issues.

From his role as regional secretary, he has coordinated the secretariats of Physical Infrastructure, Environment and Sustainability, the Management of Public Services and the decentralized entities VIVA, Ferrocarril de Antioquia and the Reforestadora Integral de Antioquia. During his appointment, López will have to cope with the ravages that winter is leaving in the department.

López’s appointment caused curiosity in the political world, since the one who has usually replaced Aníbal Gaviria as governor in charge is the regional secretary Luis Fernando Suárez.
