Making music and possibly making a living from it has always been a difficult story. Nevertheless, I believe that bands that come from Brazil and are also dedicated to rock or heavy metal have it a little tougher on their way to success. Brazil is certainly one of the most enthusiastic and passionate countries when it comes to broadcasting heavy metal to the world. That’s why it’s always even more gratifying when bands like ANGRA Haven’t thrown the guitar into the dry ground yet and are once once more drawing attention to themselves and the country with new music. ANGRA founder Rafael Bittencourt himself explains what the music world looks like in Brazil:
„It’s not easy being a band from Brazil,” confirms ANGRA founder Rafael Bittencourt. “We are geographically dispersed, our economy makes it difficult to invest in equipment, money is tight. But our culture is a great mix of different influences and that’s the wonderful thing regarding it,” he adds. “We draw our music from this huge, chaotic, loud cultural cauldron. And our songs are born from that same chaos.”
To make matters worse, over the last five years, the band has still had to deal with some challenges and a lot of pain. Bittencourt’s father died, as did ANGRA founding member Andre Matos, not to mention Corona. Nevertheless, the band gained new strength from these strokes of fate, grew from them and created their 10th studio album.
In each of the 12 new songs you can feel this time of isolation, pain and uncertainty regarding what will happen next with the band. Musically, everything is included in the new album, whether it’s a driving piece like “Ride Into The Storm” or has some goth-prog in it like “Dead Man On Display”. The title track turns out to be a sensitive ballad and “Generation Warrior” impresses as a monumental power metal track.
Brazil’s musical roots are also not forgotten. In “Vida Seca” you can hear typical sounds from the country, the whole thing is garnished with a guest vocal from the legendary Brazilian singer LENINE. Speaking of singing: It was always clear that Andre Matos would be difficult to replace, but following his departure in 2000, Eduardo Falaschi followed, who did his job very well for 12 years. Fabio Lione came on board in 2013 and has been the figurehead at ANGRA ever since. It’s incredible how he enhances every single song with his voice. With “Tears Of Blood” Lione also shows his hidden talent as an opera singer in a duet with Amanda Sommerville.
On “Cycles Of Pain” ANGRA offers a musical variety that is rarely heard today. I’ll end with Bittencourt’s confident words, which one can only confirm following listening to the new album:
„We are all in top shape and at the peak of our careers”
