Two incidents linked to repair work on the discharge pipe at the Angers pumping station have caused overflows in recent days. On November 23 and 24, the City of Gatineau had to intervene due to a breakdown. In both cases, the Ministry of the Environment was informed of the situation.
A 2.3 kilometer temporary pipeline was installed for the duration of the work from September to January.
First, on November 23, there was a leak in the pressure pipe to be repaired along Montreal Road. The duration of the leak was 24 minutes and the contents of the pipe, therefore waste water, headed towards a nearby ditch which heads towards the Ottawa River.
The next day, November 24, another incident occurred, this time at the intersection of Montreal Road and Balbuzard Road. There was even an overflow lasting a total of 8 hours.
The water that is contained in these wastewater overflows tends to be very low in oxygen. […] They contain significant loads of pathogens, viruses and bacteria.
-Philippe Maisonneuve, public policy and water quality advisor at the Rivers Foundation
The municipal councilor of the sector, Mario Aubé, defends the intervention of the City. He mentions that the City quickly informed the Ministry of the Environment, once alerted by the private contractor.
Mr. Aubé indicates that overflows can occur. He insists on the importance of the work to prevent overflows.
When we carry out work, it can happen […] let’s call it an accident or an incident. Let us hope that there are no others, but we are not immune either. At least the good thing to tell you is that it was corrected quickly and we must prevent there being others.
-Mario Aubé, municipal councilor of the Masson-Angers district
The City mentions having held a meeting on Monday with the contractor to avoid further leaks and overflows. We add that close monitoring continues with the contractor.
